Tracing An Email

24Jan06

Have you ever wondered how the Cyber Police work their way through the E-Mail hoax and stuff. Well here is a nice tutorial on how to trace an E-Mail. What makes this tutorial a must read is the way in which it has been designed, with lots of screen-shots and examples with the theory behind E-Mailing networks. It is very easy to understand and actually fun to test the tutorial with a few forwards that you have recieved.

The purpose of this guide is to show the process involved in tracing an email. The first step required to tracing an email is finding out the headers of the email. What are headers? Email headers are lines added at the top of an email message that are used by servers as the email goes on route to get delivered. Generally email clients only show the standard To, From, and Subject headers, but there are more.

Though the tutorial is based on GMail, the idea behind it is common for all major emailing services.
